Barnyard Readers - Horses

The topic for today's Barnyard Readers program was horses.  We had fun at the 1900 farm visiting their oldest horse, who is nearly 30 years old!  Like always, Jack was too scared to pet him.

Jack's favorite is always the pigs!

Syrup!

Jack was being slow (as usual) while eating breakfast this morning, so I got Katy out of her high chair and then left Jack alone at the table to finish his breakfast.  I walked out of the room for a few minutes and returned to find that Jack had helped himself to the syrup in the pantry and generously filled his plate.  He and Katy were both on their hands and knees on top of the kitchen table lapping up the syrup with their tongues.  As soon as the kids saw me, they both flashed me a guilty grin.  We all couldn't help but laugh.  What can I say, my kids love sugar!

Iowa State Fair

The kids and I had a great time at the fair today with Aunt Brittany, cousins Avree and Emmersen, and Grandma and Grandpa. Jack had a lot of fun running around with big cousin, Avree. He especially loved digging in the dirt at the "Little Hands on the Farm." Katy had fun eating food and doing whatever her big cousins were doing. The kids and I were exhausted by the end of the day, but all in all, it was a fun, and busy afternoon, filled with lots of food, a few animals, and good company!

Jack did not want to cooperate for a picture....typical!

Barnyard Readers - Sheep

The topic at Living History Farms today was sheep.  After reading a book about sheep, we took a tractor ride out to the 1850 farm to see them up close. As always, Jack refused to touch the sheep, but he did have fun pulling the wool through the combs.

Peep and Phil

Thanks to my parents, we brought home two baby chicks on Easter Sunday.  Jay has always wanted to have chickens, so he was excited.  The plan was to keep the chicks for a few weeks and then find a new home for them.  We were surprised by how quickly the baby chicks grew....and even more surprised how quickly we became attached to them!  We still have the chickens, but we plan to find a new home for them before the winter months.  Below are a few pics of our "baby chicks", affectionately named Peep and Phil.

Peep on the left and Phil on the right - this was taken the day we brought them home.

Bogey loved them - Birdie was not so sure!

He wanted to put them in his mouth so bad!

We can't tell which one is which anymore

Barnyard Readers - Cows

The topic for today's barnyard readers session at Living History Farms was cows.  After reading a book about cows, we ventured out to the 1900 farm to see them.  Jack was excited to see the baby calf, but refused to touch him!  Katy came along with us today and she had a blast seeing all the animals.
